I was reading the latest BAAU journal on deviantART where someone behind the scenes posted an update of upcoming events and meets. And I noticed that one of the events doesn't have anywhere to link to. So, here it is.
I'll be going to San Diego Comic-Con this year for the first time. I think it will be an eye-opener for me as I continue to do this research. I am expecting something huge, but, as I've recently learned, perhaps really small when it comes to the Artist Alley.
So, who else is going this year? For which days? |

I will be attending all 4 1/2 days. Are you planning on flying or driving down? I know UltraMike will be there (or else I'll scalp his badge
Artist alley is still pretty big. Its about the size of Fanime/AX. But don't discount the booths. There will be several artists that have their own booths to sell stuff (Adam Hughes, Terry Dodson, etc.) There are also those guests of big publishers such as DC and Marvel that do not have tables of their own. They will have scheduled signings so you can still meet them... Looking forward to reading about popping your SDCC cherry... |

| When you guys are in the alley try and stop to say hi to two of the artist in particular. Ron Lim, fantastic penciler, all around good guy and Mick Gray one of the best inkers in the industry. I have known them both for the 15 to 20+ years they have been in the business and they should have some great info for your research Perk. They are two of the nicest guy you will meet and are just genuine good people. |

I think I'll be flying. My teaching responsibilities will make it hard to do the drive there and back. What about you?
Thanks for the advice about artists in other places. I think I'll have to figure out how to get some numbers... as to how many artists are in the alley, and how many are in random other places. Not to mention how many artists are wandering the halls looking to show their portfolios to the right person. I assume that this happens. Am I right? |

I think we were posting at the same time...
Thanks for the references. I think I mentioned to you on Saturday that the name Ron Lim stands out from my days as an avid collector of Marvel comics. I just can't remember which series. Oh, maybe it was Wild Cats from Image. Hmmm...
I'll email you off the site about this more. I'd love to chat with them. |

You can find a list of the artists participating in Artists Alley here:
Art Alley
I will be driving down with two friends but driving back alone I believe.
I also forgot to mention that some of them also hide in the Small Press area. Small Press is another great area to meet up and coming artists with independent books.
You might know Ron Lim from the Marvel days of Silver Surfer in particular. He was famous for taking on up to 5 comic books a month and still hitting deadlines. He's a decent guy I've spoken to before (although I always had trouble tracking him down as he liked to wander around alot). Mick Gray is a very good inker as well. He's inked several great artists and a great guy the few times I have been able to talk to him.
I've made friends with several of the artists as well and would highly recommend the Wildstorm guys (Joel Gomez, JJ Kirby, Carlos D'Anda, Rich Friend, and Lee Bermejo in particular). Also Dustin Nguyen, Philip Tan, Terry Dodson, Michael Ryan, and Humberto Ramos. I will probably be running around like a headless chicken the first 1 1/2 days but if you want an introduction Dan let me know. I'm usually hanging out in the Artists Alley anyways... |

| He still works for Marvel and DC the man is a machine. We have been siting next to each other at Comic-Con and Wonder Con for about 17 years now. It works out great for both of us because he only does pencil work at shows and people always come to me for colors. He can do all the pencil layouts and then slide it over to me for inks and colors. It's been a great relationship and I feel lucky to be able to call him a friend. |

| I'll be at SDCC Wednesday to most of Sunday. It's a crazy con, if you've never been there before! |

Dan,
I haven't fully figured out my schedule yet, but I'm sure you will find me wandering around in the artist alley most of wednesday to friday. There are a few other artists I go say hi to in the area close to the entrance doors from the artist alley if you can't find me in the alley. Either way we can definitely coordinate at some point. |

@Karen: Hope to see you around... in between thousands of other people. I haven't been there before, so it will be all new to me. Unfortunately, I can't stay down for longer.
@hojo: Sounds good. I'll be on the look-out. |
