Agathe des Ténèbres
Where: New Orleans, Louisiana
When: 1820s
Back story:
Agathe was born in the early 1800s on a plantation in Louisiana. Her mother, Catalina, was a very religious woman, and a devout follower of Voodoo. During her upbringing, Agathe learned extensive knowledge of spells, gris-gris, and rootwork from her mother. Her preteen life was what one could expect from a slave girl during those times. It wasn't until the age of thirteen that her life took a startling turn. It isn't completely clear what happened, and what we do know comes from the plantation owner's son, who claimed it was a kitchen "accident" involving a pot of boiling oil and Agathe's face. In addition to becoming horribly disfigured, Agathe became irrevocably blind as well. In those days, it was not uncommon for a master to kill a slave who had become permanently disabled. Despite her mother's pleading, Agathe was brought to the back of the manor and shot. Seconds before death, an unnamed loa (Voodoo spirit/god) responded to her mother's prayers and spirited away the girl's body from the human world. In addition to restoring her vision, the loa also granted Agathe immense powers which she used to wreak vengeance on those who had ruined her. Thus, she became Agathe des Ténèbres (Agathe of Darkness.) Now in her twenties, Agathe lives in a cave between the human and spirit realms. Many believe her to be a loa of judgment, and although she is still very human, any can summon her to avenge a wrong done to them or a loved one. At most times, she wears a mask to cover her scarred face, and is rarely seen without it.
Powers:
Most of her powers come from spells and various concoctions, but she is well-known for:
*Creating illusions and nightmares
*Wall/ceiling-climbing
*Inhuman speed
Weapons:
*Dagger
*Powders and potions |

@victorybear
awesome concept! her background is such a compelling/tragic story, i want to read more about it, hahah. (the story just feels like a real-life legend passed down for generations) i also really dig the painterly style you used for the piece -- it really fits the mood and definitely sets the creepy mood associated with voodoo magic! |

@driftjunky13
Thanks! I was originally going to draw her eyes in, but ended up going with the creepy magic glow instead. I'm glad it seemed to work out!
@ultramike
Thanks so much! I spent a while reading up on Voodoo and the time period because I was paranoid I would mess up and write something wildly inaccurate. I'm totally obsessed with Voodoo stuff now, and I'm even considering doing a mini comic about my character if I have the time. By the way, I really liked yours as well, and your back story bit was hilarious! |

@victorybear
looks great!
It's really cool how everyone picked completely different eras and powers.
Mine seems shoddy by comparison, but here goes:
The Wheel
The Wheel began as a simple if somewhat eccentric girl. One day while playing her favorite game of racing boulders down hills, she had a flash of inspiration. A week later she emerged from her father's workshop as... The Wheel! With her newfound ability to move very very fast (downhill) she became an invaluable scout and courier for her tribe. Several rival tribes had tried to imitate her technology without success: The Triangle and The Square were failures, but one tribe came close with The Dodecadon.
I'll post the August challenge theme tomorrow. |

Did you make her body and circle in the shape of a peace sign or is that just me overthinking it? |

PC: Hahahaha, what a fun idea! I wish I came up with it!
Victorybear: That's a beautifully painted image you have there, and I agree with others on the compelling backstory!
I totally flaked on doing one for this, I think I'll do it someday anyway, even though it will be super late! |

@pineapple-pocky: actually that's the result of me trying to follow through a gesture-line and being too lazy to draw her left hand. But now that you mention it, it does look like a peace sign, almost.
Btw I've finally posted the August challenge! Sorry for being late.
Let me know what you think? |
